The Specac DC-3 Diamond Compression Cell is designed for transmission FTIR microscopy of solid and semi-solid samples such as fibers, microplastics, particulates, and paint chips. It enables compression of these materials to an optimal thickness, enhancing IR transmission measurements by reducing sample scattering and improving signal-to-noise ratio.
The cell consists of two flat stainless steel plates, each equipped with a diamond window approximately 3.5 mm in diameter and 0.5 mm thick, aligned and compressed by thumbscrew fasteners. A compressible O-ring between the plates ensures uniform pressure and sample contact. A 1.5 mm clear aperture facilitates microscale sample analysis under the IR microscope. Optional beam condenser kits with ZnSe or KRS-5 lenses focus the IR beam 4x to illuminate the cell aperture in benchtop FTIR instruments.
