Starna DNACON

Starna DNACON is a Certified Reference Material designed for quality control and assurance of nucleic acid purity measurements based on the 260/280 nm absorbance ratio. The 260/280 ratio is a standard indicator of nucleic acid purity, where pure DNA and RNA solutions have ratios of ≥ 1.8 and ≥ 2.0 respectively.

This reference consists of a synthetic solution whose spectral characteristics closely mimic those of DNA, sealed permanently in a far-UV quartz cell. It provides a stable, reliable, and NIST-traceable standard that replicates actual DNA sample absorbance, enabling direct validation of the measurement process. The 280 nm absorbance is measured on a steep spectral slope, meaning small wavelength variations (±1 nm) significantly affect the ratio, emphasizing the need for precise instrument qualification.

Features and Purposes
  • Certified absorbance values provided at 260 nm, 280 nm, and 330 nm for spectral bandwidths of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 nm
  • The 330 nm value serves as a background correction to calculate a corrected 260/280 ratio using the formula: Ratio = (A260 – A330) / (A280 – A330)
  • Typical calculated 260/280 ratio is approximately 1.9
  • Packaged for use with dedicated microvolume instruments
  • Traceability to NIST standards ensuring measurement reliability and reproducibility
  • Heat-sealed far-UV quartz cell for sample stability and integrity
