Near-and Mid-infrared Polystyrene References

Starna Polystyrene References are traceable materials designed for qualification of Mid IR – FTIR spectrophotometers over the wavelength range of 540 cm-1 to 3125 cm-1 (3.2 µm to 18.5 µm). These references can be used to verify wavelength accuracy and, depending on the version, the resolution of Mid IR instruments, including Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) measurement systems.

The product RM-1921/38 consists of a 38 µm polystyrene film mounted in a card holder featuring 14 certified absorption peaks traceable to NIST SRM 1921b. These peaks allow precise wavelength qualification and pharmacopoeia compliance assessment (European, Japanese, US Pharmacopeias) for Mid IR instruments. An alternative version, RM-1921/65, adds certified peaks in the NIR region with calibration traceable to NIST SRM 2065 but is not suitable for resolution compliance.

  • Nominal certified wavenumber peaks for RM-1921/38: 539, 842, 907, 1028, 1069, 1155, 1583, 1601, 1943, 2849, 3001, 3026, 3060, 3082 cm-1
  • Resolution qualification using absorption minima and maxima at 2849.5 and 2870 cm-1, and at 1583 and 1589 cm-1 as per European and Japanese Pharmacopoeia criteria
  • RM-1921/65 includes additional NIR peaks at 3064, 3647, 4039, 4250, 4335, 4608, 5952, 8749 cm-1 (3264 to 1143 nm)
  • Calibration certificates specify measured values at defined bandwidths (1.00 cm-1 for MIR, 0.4 nm for NIR)
  • Versions available for ATR wavelength qualification (RM-1921/38/ATR variants)
